Piperine is an alkaloid found in the spikes and oleoresin of the peppercorn plant, is also present in high concentration in the skin of the pepper berries. Piperine is also found in black pepper and similar plants, and, even though piperine obtained from natural sources is about 98% pure, it is for chemical and medical purposes, laboratory-produced.

 

Function

1- Anti-inflammation
Piperine can inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Thereby, it cuts down the expression of inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin 1, interleukin 6, tumor necrosis factor α, etc. Therefore, Piperine can reduce inflammation and pain. It exerts an anti-inflammatory effect.

2-Promotion of penetration
Piperine can be absorbed through the skin, and act directly on subcutaneous tissues, nerves, and blood vessels. Thus Piperine can significantly improve and promote absorption and utilization of active ingredients in the skin. Also, it can help cosmetic ingredients quickly penetrate into the skin.

3-Anti-oxidation
Piperine can reduce oxidative stress damage of cells in the process of oxygen free radicals generation and scavenge.
Additionally, it has a certain scavenging capacity for hydroxyl and DPPH free radicals. It exhibits anti-oxidation property. Its anti-oxidative capacity is equivalent to 60.05% of vitamin C, and it is stable in an acidic medium.

4-Other function
Piperine can stimulate the activity of melanocytes. It increases the amount of tyrosine and promotes the expression of TPR1. Thus Piperine accelerates the synthesis of melanin in epidermal melanocytes. It can be added to cosmeceuticals for the treatment of depigmentation dermatosis.
