Rutin, also known as vitamin P or rutoside, is an important flavonoid. Many plants, fruits, and vegetables are a rich source of rutin, such as apples, passion flower, buckwheat, and tea. The name "rutin" comes from the plant Rue (Ruta graveolens), which also contains rutin. Eating foods rich in rutin on a daily basis has an array of potential benefits for the whole body.
Like all flavonoids, rutin is an antioxidant. It's one of the most important and well-researched flavonoids. Rutin has anti-inflammatory and cancer-fighting potential, and may protect the heart, liver, brain, and bones.

Function

1. Antioxidant effect

Rutin is a natural antioxidant that can scavenge excessive free radicals in the body, such as superoxide anion radicals and hydroxyl radicals. These free radicals can damage cell membranes, proteins, and nucleic acids, leading to a variety of diseases, including those related to aging. Rutin protects cells from oxidative stress by providing hydrogen atoms to neutralize free radicals. For example, in some in - vitro cell experiments, the addition of rutin can significantly reduce cell damage induced by oxidative stress and increase cell survival rate.

 

2. Cardiovascular system - protecting effect

 

• Reducing capillary permeability and fragility: Rutin can enhance the resistance of capillaries and maintain their normal permeability. This helps prevent capillary rupture and bleeding and is effective in preventing and improving diseases caused by fragile capillaries, such as purpura.
• Antithrombotic effect: It can inhibit platelet aggregation and reduce the risk of thrombosis. Platelet aggregation is a crucial step in thrombosis, and rutin exerts its antithrombotic effect by inhibiting the relevant signaling pathways and reducing platelet activity.
• Antihypertensive effect: Rutin can dilate blood vessels and reduce peripheral vascular resistance, thereby lowering blood pressure. Some animal experiments have shown that rutin can reduce the blood pressure of hypertensive model animals to varying degrees.

3. Anti - inflammatory effect

Rutin can inhibit the release of inflammatory factors such as interleukin - 1β (IL - 1β), interleukin - 6 (IL - 6), and tumor necrosis factor - α (TNF - α). These inflammatory factors play a key role in the inflammatory response. By inhibiting their release, rutin can alleviate the inflammatory response.
