Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is an important nutrient for animal health because of its role in metabolizing nucleic acids (e.g., DNA) and forming proteins from amino acids. It also helps the body process fats and carbohydrates, and is used by the liver to make glucose.
Cobalamin interacts with folic acid in several interesting ways:
Vitamin B12 is necessary for the growth and reproduction of many cells, which is especially critical for DNA repair and fetal development. Other useful functions include maintaining the nervous system and aiding sheep in the production of wool.
1. Improve the utilization rate of folic acid, synthesize methionine (synthesized from homocysteine) and choline together with folic acid, and synthesize cyanocobalamine in the process of producing purine and pyrimidine, such as methylcobalamine and coenzyme B12, which participate in the methylation process of many important compounds. When vitamin B12 is deficient, the activity of transferring methyl groups from methyltetrahydrofolate decreases, making folic acid an unusable form, leading to folic acid deficiency.
2. Maintain the metabolism and function of nerve myelin sheath. Lack of vitamin B12 can cause neurological disorders, spinal cord degeneration, and chemical book can cause serious mental symptoms. Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to peripheral neuritis. The early manifestations of vitamin B12 deficiency in children are abnormal mood, dull expression, slow response, and finally lead to anemia.
3. Promote the development and maturation of red blood cells. Methylmalonyl coenzyme A is converted into succinyl coenzyme A, which is involved in the tricarboxylic acid cycle. Succinyl coenzyme A is related to the synthesis of heme.
4. Vitamin B12 also participates in the synthesis of deoxynucleic acid (DNA), the metabolism of fat, carbohydrate and protein, and increases the synthesis of nucleic acid and protein.
